Christy Jones, Acting Deputy Director for Statewide Emergency Preparedness and Security

Christy Jones became the Department of Water Resources’ Acting Deputy Director for Statewide Emergency Preparedness and Security (SEPS) in January 2017.

Christy began her career in the private industry developing flood awareness models and designing storm drain systems. Christy then served in a variety of managerial positions over a ten year period with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Sacramento District. Her positions included Chief of the Water Management Section, Drought Coordinator, Chief of the Hydrology and Hydraulics Branch, Lead Senior Reservoir Operations Manager for the Water Management Section, and PL 84-99 Program Manager of Emergency Operations. Christy has served as team leader for flood and other emergency response activities. Her duties included organizing teams to be ready for deployment and managing deployed employees responding to emergencies such as the Alabama and Missouri tornadoes and the Missouri and North Dakota flooding in 2011. She was deployed for a month in 2011 as an Assistant Team Leader for the response to the Joplin, Missouri tornadoes. Christy also constructed and facilitated emergency preparedness exercises for employees responding to different types of emergencies. While at the Corps, Christy worked closely with DWR on projects such as Forecast-Coordinated Operations, the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan, and other emergency exercises and plan updates.

Christy has worked for the SEPS Deputy Director on a wide range of duties supporting operations in the office and field, assisting with training and exercises, developing action plans in coordination with State, federal, and local agencies, and providing direct oversight of assigned special engineering projects. She also leads DWR's Emergency Preparedness Training Committee.

Christy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University and her Master of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Davis, and is a licensed civil engineer.
