fishSince 2005, the California Department of Water Resources has co-sponsored Catch A Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.), offering disabled and disadvantaged children an opportunity to experience fishing on a beautiful California reservoir along the State Water Project (SWP). DWR partners with the national, nonprofit C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation formed in 1991, working with groups who donate funding, supplies and staffing to offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the children.

Today, DWR works with surrounding communities near Oroville, Brannan Island in the Delta, Castaic, Silverwood and Perris lakes, and O’Neill Forebay to coordinate the events at SWP reservoirs. Each event is open to disabled and disadvantaged children ages 7 to 17. Each child must be pre-registered and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Space is limited.

CAST events are successful with the help of local boaters willing to take a special needs child and their guardian out on a SWP lake to fish and learn about natural resources.

Participants (special needs children), boaters and first mates must register for the event. Click on one of the locations listed below that is nearest you for more information on each event.
