Watershed Restoration Program

This program is closed and all funding authorized has been committed.

This program, authorized by the Water Security, Clean Drinking Water, Clean Water, Coastal, and Beach Protection Act of 2002 (Proposition 50), provided grant funding to local, state, and federal agencies, special districts, state colleges, and universities, and specified non-profit organizations. Eligible project elements included completing watershed assessment and management plans, implementing projects identified in adopted watershed management plans, and evaluation and demonstration of the value of a watershed approach. The program worked with locally led stewardship efforts to integrate the needs of communities, urban and rural, with resource management that sustains watershed ecology. This program informed and educated people about their watersheds while seeking to cultivate and nurture collaborative watershed management throughout the state; it sought to identify and define the benefits and values that these watersheds provide.

Between 2005 and 2007, DWR awarded $18.9 million to 55 watershed restoration projects. Questions about this program and the projects funded should be sent to
