2010 UWMP Tools

This page has information and links that a water supplier may find helpful in preparing its 2010 UWMP.

Determining Hydrologic Basin

The information below summarizes three tools by which a water supplier can determine the hydrologic basin within which it is located. The first is a Google Earth add-on, the second is a shape file, and the third is the DWR program IRWIS.

Google Earth. Click on the link here to open a .kml file that inserts an overlay into Google Earth. You have to be in Google Earth to open the file. The water supplier can then zoom in and determine its hydrologic basin.

Shape File. Click on the link here to open a zip file containing a series of files in various formats that can be used to prepare maps with regional outlines. File formats are: SHX, DBF, PRJ, SBN, SBX, and SHP.

IRWIS. IWRIS (Integrated Water Resources Information System) is a web-based, data management tool for water resources data that is accessible on DWR's website. Anyone can register and access the water data available within IWRIS. Once registered, the hydrologic regions can be accessed on the right-hand toolbar. On the Layers tab, go to the Base Map section and toggle the DWR Hydrologic Basins. Move around and zoom in using the left-hand tool bar.

Water Conservation Bill of 2009 (SBx7-7) Tools

Urban retail water suppliers providing more than 3,000 acre-feet per year or with 3,000 or more water connections are required to determine a baseline per capita water use value and then identify an urban water use target to be achieved by 2020, and then report these values in their 2010 UWMPs. This effort support the State of California in reaching its objective of a 20 percent per capita water use reduction by the year 2020. How a water supplier is to determine both of these numbers is discussed in the Methodologies Report.

Tables from the Methodologies report:

In addition to the Methodologies report, DWR has developed a Method 4 calculator and calculator instructions These tools assist a water supplier in evaluating its urban water use target, if it uses Method 4 to calculate its urban water use target.
