The California Water Plan

The California Water Plan (Water Plan) is the State government's strategic plan for managing and developing water resources statewide for current and future generations. It provides a collaborative planning framework for elected officials, agencies, tribes, water and resource managers, businesses, academia, stakeholders, and the public to develop findings and recommendations and make informed decisions for California's water future.

Our goal for each update of the Water Plan is to receive broad input and support from Californians in producing a strategic water plan that meets California Water Code requirements, guides State investments, and advances integrated water management and sustainable outcomes.

California Water Sustainability — Water Plan Update 2018

The California Water Plan Update 2018 (Update 2018) will focus on sustainable outcomes. Moving California towards more sustainable outcomes requires a long-term, consistent, and self-correcting planning and policy-making framework. Update 2018 and subsequent updates will provide a State venue for monitoring, evaluating, recommending actions, and adapting to keep California on a path of sustainability.
