DWR Sets Final Snow Survey of 2008 Season
The fifth and final snow survey of the 2008 winter season by DWR will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Phillips Station, Highway 50 and Sierra at Tahoe Road (about 90 miles east of Sacramento) near Lake Tahoe. (04/15/2008) News Release...DWR Snow Survey March 26
DWR's fourth 2008 winter snow survey will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008, near Lake Tahoe. Monthly measurements are made through May to help forecast the amount of spring runoff into reservoirs. The fourth survey is generally considered to be the most important in gauging how much water is being held in the Sierra snow pack. Results of today's snow survey by DWR show Sierra snowpack conditions at 118 percent of normal for this time of year. While this would normally be a positive indication that the state's water supply is in good shape, DWR also announced that it will need to further reduce Delta pumping starting today to comply with a federal court order limiting water exports. Survey Photos...Under the authority of California Water Code Section 228, the Snow Surveys Section administers the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program, coordinating and receiving snow and related data from cooperators, and issuing forecasts of runoff from major snowmelt watersheds. These forecasts are officially published in DWR's Bulletin 120. Hydrologic data used in producing the water supply forecasts is maintained by fellow section, the California Data Exchange Center. The State has coordinated Snow Surveys since 1930, and we have been publishing our water supply forecasts online since early 1994.
